With today’s parents having grown up without the internet, social media mobile phones, it’s no wonder 1 in 3 have concerns or questions about their child’s technology use (Pew Research Center). While they have access to online blogs, news reports and once-off presentations run by schools, parents still lack the necessary support and education they require when it comes to cybersafety.
In order to fully understand a concept, students need to be taught over a period of time and by utilising a number of different learning strategies. Students also learn best when there is opportunity for collaboration. This is a fundamental principle of education applied in the classroom, when teaching children. As a teacher and entrepreneur, I believe the same approach can work to educate parents about the risks and trends of digital technologies.
The Cyber-Savvy Parenting Program is a unique and innovative approach to educating parents. It combines both online and offline components in an effort to address all experience levels, learning styles and ensure that learning takes place over an extended period of time, to allow for maximum understanding and application.
The program provides 6 online video lessons, complete with transcripts, learning activities and quizzes. These 6 lessons cover the most important aspects of online safety parents need to be aware of:
- digital devices,
- online content,
- social networking & gaming,
- cyberbullies & online friendships,
- online predators,
- digital footprints.
Further to these lessons are parent guides and video tutorials for popular social media sites, apps and games. Support and collaboration is provided in the way of a Q&A forum, a closed Facebook Group made up of all members of the program and a 20 minute one-on-one consultation call with Kim. Regular meet-ups and workshops allow members in Perth, Western Australia the opportunity to form friendships and extend their learning in a hands-on, practical way.
Years of experience and research have gone into finalizing the content for this program, and I am so excited that it has finally launched! From my encounters and discussions with parents I am aware of how challenging it can be to keep up to speed with the rapidly changing trends and risks online, particularly when your child seems so tech-savvy! I believe this program is a way to bridge the digital divide, to give the power back to parents and ensure you are well-equipped to navigate your child safely through the online world.
In hindsight, I should not have called the Cyber-Savvy Parenting Program a ‘program’, as really it is so much more than that. Ultimately, it is going to become a community of like-minded parents learning and supporting one another throughout the turbulent and tech-rich tween and teen years.
